A market was operated by the Chinese residents of Central and Sheung Wan districts on this site as early as 1842. The current building was constructed in the Bauhaus style between 1938 and 1939 made it the most modern market of the era. In 1994, a part of the market was converted to to a shopping arcade forming a part of the Central Escalator linking Central to the Mid-level. The market ceased operation in March 2003 and reopened after revitalisation in August 2021.
