God Draws Near — Advent 2022

The word Advent is derived from the Latin word Adventus, meaning ‘arrival’.  It is a season of the liturgical year observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting for and focusing on God’s arrival.  It culminates in the celebration of Christmas.

God draws near to humanity in three historical moments: when God the Son was born in the flesh in Bethlehem; when God’s Holy Spirit comes to live inside believers; and when the Lord one day returns in glory.

Each week’s Advent service will be accompanied by the lighting of a candle to help us ponder the Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace that Christ brings.  Then, on Christmas Day, we will light the final candle and contemplate on Jesus’ birth.

As we seek 2walk2gether as a church, may we experience anew a God who draws near and walks together with us.

The Gospel Concerning Jesus Christ

Almost all Christians would agree on the central place of the Gospel message to the Christian faith, and yet, these days, there is little agreement and clarity on what the message is all about. In this miniseries, we will attempt to understand accurately what is the content of the “good news” concerning Jesus Christ, and then, to reflect on how the Gospel informs us of what it means to be “church” and followers of Christ.

Galatians 1:6-12 (NIV)

No Other Gospel

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul Called by God

11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

Luke 4:16-21 (NIV)

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Scripture: Isaiah 52:7-10

Isaiah 52:7-10 (NIV)

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
    who bring good tidings,
    who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
    “Your God reigns!”

8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;
    together they shout for joy.
When the Lord returns to Zion,
they will see it with their own eyes.

9 Burst into songs of joy together,
    you ruins of Jerusalem,
for the Lord has comforted his people,
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The Lord will lay bare his holy arm
in the sight of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth will see
    the salvation of our God.
