Koinonia

The Fellowship of the Saints

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts‬ ‭2:42‬)

Fifty days after Christ’s resurrection His followers were filled by the promised Holy Spirit, marking the birth of the Church.  Within weeks thousands were added to their number.  The Christian community in Jerusalem had to learn very quickly how to work and walk with each other in truth and love.

The Greek word “Koinonia” is commonly translated into English as “fellowship” (see Acts 2:42). True Christian fellowship is not easy nor to be taken for granted, yet is the foundation for the Church and fuels her mission to the world. The first 7 chapters of the Book of Acts helps us to better understand the challenges and joys of being in such Christian community — to walk together.

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:

Greetings.

Trials and Temptations

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

Jesus Walks on the Water

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
